Speeding up your Steam downloads.
I recently reinstalled Windows on my pc, which meant that I had to download all of my games off steam again. I started downloading one, and it capped about 30kb/s, which is a lot lower than it should have been. However, I just left it running overnight and it was installed in the morning.
However, there was a Left4Dead patch released today that downloaded at 3-7kb/s, and would have taken almost an hour. I was needed in a game, and a friend suggested deleting my ClientRegistry.blob file in C:\Program Files\Steam. I copied it to my desktop just in case, then deleted it. After restarting steam, I had to log in again but my patch download started up again at 700kb/s, which is much more like it.
If you find that your steam client is downloading a lot more slowly than it should be, give it a try
Remember to back the file up first, though. Just in case.
